Manage Quora Presence as a Service to Companies?

by Saul Fleischman on July 23, 2011

This is what I’m thinking to do, actually. I would love to know what you think about this idea. To be clear, consultants and socialmedia consulting companies manage Facebook, blog, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. accounts. Why not Quora? Why not me?

In Quora, I have been developing a presence for myself and the KdL Web2.0 Social Media Group (formed initially in LinkedIn, one and a half years ago, 2/15/2010), and find it a great place to get reactions, be seen, build credibility, and manage brand image. In the last six weeks, I have built a bit of a following in Quora, and the more I use it, the more I find I get direct answers to the questions that I direct to specific individuals (an option to do with an already-posted question).

I am pondering the value (and how to price this…?) of working with companies and organizations, to manage their Quora presences as well as teach their staff basics in using Quora as a learning tool, a “live reference” space, if you will.

For organizations, non-profits, I envision training staff in:
* Researching facts related to the causes that the organizations support
* Querying the attitudes and beliefs the people have about the work they are doing
* Learning more about the resources that people rely on to get the information their beliefs and attitudes are built on
* Recruiting supporters who are passionate about their cause and willing to support others who are interested in the topic also.
* Discovering, over time, which answers to problems and questions are valued most by the community
* Networking with other companies/organizations and finding ways to collaborate on issues
* Refining messages and statements based on the feedback that employees/organization members get from others

Is this a viable service to market, though? How do you charge social media management clients for managing their Quora presence? << Wow, a new question to post in Quora! Here is the link, so you may see the reactions this garners. Here is how I worded it in Quora:

How do you charge social media management clients for managing their Quora presence?
Is this a viable service to market?

Flag-block request:
I am well aware that we may not have an account with a company name. Kindly consider how many company names are ‘Topics’ in Quora. Those topics are searchable. Any of us may answer questions tagged with those company name topics – and as such, we do see staff of topic-tagged companies defending their brands, products, and firms.

Why not offer this as a service? How to bill, what to offer clients, I would love to know your ideas on this.
For fun, initially I added topics as below. Let’s see how many get cut by the Quora Gestapo, and if the question gets re-directed or edited (I will add to this blog post if and when that happens, and also add reactions as garnered in Quora):

Social Entrepreneurship
Corporate Image
Social Branding
Topics on Quora
Marketing
Social Media Marketing
Social Commerce
Brand Strategy
Quora (product)
Corporate Social Strategist

As a last note, having just launched this question and then tweeted the link, and finally, I directed it to people whose opinions and advice I value, on the topic of economic viability of such social media management services. I would ask you to consider how this question will likely receive more comments and answers in Quora than it will on my blog. Where will you comment?

Thanks, Arthur. We’ll see – partly as a social media experiment – how and where (here/the Quora question – http://www.quora.com/How-do-you-charge-social-media-management-clients-for-managing-their-Quora-presence) this questiongets reactions. Appreciate your support, and always.

Saul. I knew you were a deep thinker, bro.

I like it. Certainly, Quora, at this point (like a couple of people said on that thread) isn’t big enough in a lot of people’s eyes, BUT there definitely is a critical many, that puts it up there and makes it important.

That being said, I think that if it continues to grow, what you’re saying, the service you’re thinking of providing to customers, could really become wanted and needed. Even now, I think it’s definitely doable.

As for how to price it. I need to learn a bit more about Quora. I’ve spent NOT MUCH time there. Swell idea though, man.

WE STILL HAVE TO SKYPE IT UP! Forgot about that man. Soon for sure.

    • Saul Fleischman

Thanks, Ryan. Actually, Quora is rather large in user-base, and many firms manage their product and company reputation, deal with questions and gripes within Quora. I thus wonder if there might be a busines in doing that on their behalf.

And then, similarly, what about the same in Google Plus?

      • Ryan Critchett

Right, I agree it’s large, that’s why I said it makes sense that even now, this will work and is doable.

G+ I think the same but the question really has to become, is it best practice to outsource your social media anything? Isn’t that what you’re talking about? Managing a company’s social interaction, even if it’s in a Q&A environment? It’s hard for me to align with outsourcing anything, from a standpoint of authenticity. Then, what if you suddenly decide you want to go join the circus?

        • Saul Fleischman

To outsource or not? Some presence and reputation management: isn’t it better than zero presence…? And we – you and I, at least – have at least some idea of how to deal with a community, and may companies don’t have that talent in-house.

I’m playing devil’s advocate here, so maybe this will be food for thought:

I think it might be a good additional service to add on top of general social networking support to offer to companies in need of a social media strategist. I’m not sure if it could really be applied as a singular service that you could make a living from. The reason is: if a company needs a rep to find answers, Quora must be too hard to use and will probably never grow to be big enough to be considered authoritative. If the company is looking to GIVE answers, it seems like lawyers and an internal PR team would want to be involved which means the representative would have to go through both of those groups to get answers from the real people who have them. Why wouldn’t those people give them? Would they want to spend the time answering a representative if they’re getting no personal or professional value (ie, they’re not on Quora, so what’s the benefit of answering questions if they’re never going to get answers to theirs) compared to the time spent not doing work? Additionally, would anyone consider the answers from an external source authoritative?

    Food for thought.

    • Saul Fleischman

That’s just it: liability will be the key. Probably what would make doing this a bad idea (that people are going to do, anyway, with Google+).

  • GraphicDesignNY

I believe the idea is viable from experience. I work with a few non-profits and emphasize the point that they need to cover the basic social networks Twittter, FB, G+and LinkedIn. But that it is a good idea to be represented, visible and a potential trustworthy go to source in other areas of the arena such as Quora, MetaFilter, Formspring and StackExchange.
